Would You Like To Know More?

So would I. In fact this entire site is (ostensibly) designed for the sole purpose of aquiring new and interesting information about OUR WORLD.

To further this end, I thought my readers might enjoy sharing interesting factoids they have found. (Actually, I thought it might save me some work trying to find something interesting to write about, but that's beside the point.)
Today and tomorrow whatever site or information you give me will posted here. With trimmings. And you know that's gotta be good.

Easy to make hard cider. All you need is a jug of apple juice, an airlock and stopper, some yeast, and some brown sugar. I guess you could get bottling equipment as well, though I suspect it might work ok right in the jug. (note: that's just a guess - not responsible if your jug explodes)

Yeah, I'm a shirker, not a worker. But you should see how hard I have been working for the man over here. Oh work! Lots of it. And hard work, too!

Elephants can't even run; true fact. Now what was this about how elephants fill a newspaper? I can only think of one way an elephant can fill an entire newspaper...

Hey, I not only learned something new today, I taught it to others and used it. Bought a 1 gallon jug of apple juice. Poured a cup into a (sanitized) container. Poured some beer into the jug (for yeast) and shook it. Drilled a hole in the lid, inserted the short end of a bendy-straw (sanitized), screwed the lid back on. Hot glued the bendy-straw in place, inserted other end of bendy-straw into water to create a makeshift airlock. In a few days I'll bottle some home-made cider.

The United States has more citizens incarcerated than any other country on the planet.

The classic 'index-and-pinkie-fingers up' heavy metal salute is actually the sign for 'mock' in American Sign Language (or at least the current version of ASL). So all of the fans of the metal bands were actually saying 'we mock you'.

(I think you mean percentage of people incarcerated)

(Actually, I don't. Surprising, ain't it?) "...over the last 20 years, the number of prisoners has surged in every state in the country. While the nation's population has grown by only 20 percent, the number of Americans held in local, state, and federal lockups has doubled -- and then doubled again. The United States now locks up some two million people. That's far more than ever before, and more than any other country on earth. And the number is still growing." You can read more here. More than 8.75 million folks are held in penal institutions throughout the world. About half of these are in the United States (1.96 million), Russia (0.92 million) or China (1.43 million plus pre-trial detainees and prisoners in 'administrative detention').

However, World, you aren't wrong. We're #1 percentage-wise as well. The rate of incarceration per 100,000 citizens shapes up something like this:
1. USA (686 per 100,000)
2. Cayman Islands (664)
3. Russia (638)
4. Belarus (554)
5. Kazakhstan (522)
6. Turkmenistan (489)
7. Belize (459)
8. Bahamas (447)
9. Suriname (437)
10. Republica Dominica (420)

For a comparison to European nations, the United Kingdom's rate of 139 per 100,000 citizens is the highest among countries in the European Union.

There are really good books on the subject if you're up for more light research.
