That's not it at all. It's a picture that makes you wonder why it was taken. Why a garbage can? Why the perspective - low to the ground. That must have taken some effort - lying on the ground to take it. Perhaps it's a commentary on the photogropher's life: s/he's low and in the dumps? s/he's trashed and on the floor? Life is just a florescently lit, white walled, industrial carpet workplace/library on the floor by the garbage can.
Wow. I've searched for proto dalek on google and I am sorry to say I am no closer to finding a reasonable definition for this phrase. I think, Matthew M., you should take it upon yourself to illuminate me as to what this is so that I can indeed learn something new today.
You were Googling too hard. A Dalek is a robot from the Brittish science fiction series Doctor Who, which you have no way of knowing about in this country unless you were a little bit nerdly as a teenager and spent about a month in jr high school programming a Dr Who cartoon on your school's Apple II with a friend that wears a long colorful scarf.
I watched (one of the) Dr. Whos only by accident, when visiting friends. But it was impossible not to note the highly advanced garbage can construction of the evil Daleks.
The show was, no doubt, (along with the endless scarf guy), a boon to the doofest English child every halloween; in a battered trash can or old cardboard box he could imagine costume technology that might surpass the show.

//in jr high school//
There's the problem. I watched doctor who as an infant. I can't remember anything except the floppy hat and scarf.
I think I have just enough time before Haloween to build a costume that nobody will get, save perhaps my Brittish neighbor.
Aw, that's cute, World!
Thanks, w-ginee, for the explanation.
