I thought they both had one. What's the use of two?
Right there in Google:
"Sperm whales are the only great whales to have only one blowhole (instead of two)."

They're nostrils. I'd expect that they all started off with two and sperm whales, for some reason, ended up with the two merging into one. Not entirely sure why most vertibrates have two nostrils, though.
I was hoping one was intake and one was exhaust. Along that line, how come we haven't evolved past a two-way system for air? We've been doing the one-way method for food since the worm stage of evolution. You'd think a one-way air system would be more efficient.
Ah, but a two-way breathing system is MUCH more expressive!
Why does a sperm whale have only one nostril? And why is a raven like a writing desk? What is the sound of one sperm whale clapping? How many roads must a man walk down?
(I'm having too much fun. Any requests for blogger bits? I'm taking requests.)
That was me. I'm not really anonymous. Just not logged on.
Requests?!?! Then you must do a song. For old times. Sing about your dream job.

where did you get this question from? a daily calendar?
I was looking at gettting one with all kind of interesting factoids and this one sounds familiar.
anywho, i learned something today! thanks!
You're on to me, honestus! This tidbit came from my father's trivia calendar. (Which I bought him, not interestingly) So, good detective work there. Although I'm a little embarassed to have my sources revealed. "Who me? My fly is open?"
