Andrew's South African Life

So let's say you're sent away on business to attend a conference and when you get there, instead of receiving a complimentary continental breakfast and a cheap nametag you are handed a truck and a wildlife preserve. Pretty nice, huh?

Andrew snapped these pics from the back of a rampaging rhino.

Damn. And I was happy with my flashing fake ice cube, fir saplings, and collection of pens.

I'm sure they're just like regular kitties, go over there and try to pick 'er up.

I never knew that the plural of rhinoceros is rhinoceres. I didn't even know that rhinoceros had a plural-- I thought maybe you could just sort of make it up-- something like 'rhinocerusseses,' as in that song about wanting a hippopotamus for Christmas. You are not kidding about that 'learning something new every day' stuff...

Hey I didn't know that about rhinos either. I always just called them "rhinos."

This definition seems to suggest something different. Apparently it is a Greek word and the Latin plural might not suffice!. I hope I got the link bit right cos I don;t know how to modify or delete these links!

Wikipedia suggests a Greek source for the word, and the correct plural being rhinoceroses. I must say that I have never really thought too much about the singular and plural before, although it isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you see these huge creatures (though the babies are cute in a ugly way)

My first instinct was also to cuddle the little lions, but some of the warnings from our ranger would suggest this would not be that sensible....
