Philosophy Hour

Who is the bigger fool? The man who shouts, "There is a God!" in a godless universe? Or the man who stands with fists akimbo declaring, "There is NO god!" while the God of the universe looks on?

Depends on how much time they waste shouting, I suppose. If, for example, one spends, say, half his waking hours shouting and the other only shouts for five minutes on alternate Thursdays and bank holidays, then the former is the more foolish. He could be applying that time to much more useful activities.

I, for one, don't spend a lot of time shouting or even talking about it. I know a lot of people who do spend a lot of time shouting, talking and/or singing about their particular belief or non-belief. If they're wrong, then they've wasted a good portion of their lives. Even if they're right, they're spending a lot of time reaffirming something they already know.

Most people would probably be a lot better off if they would just say to themselves, "This is what I believe. I don't need people, rituals, books or TV shows to help me believe it. Now, what's for lunch?"

That's the way I see it, at least. Is it lunchtime yet?

I tried both, and I definitely felt more foolish being the second guy--but that was more due to standing fists akimbo than anything else.

Fists akimbo... That's got to be one of my favorite phrases.

What I want to know is how you made God disappear and then reappear! Amazing.

Sounded to me like a rowdy Eskimo...

By the way, does anyone else find that "Eye of Knowledge" slightly disturbing?

Hey, k! Try a Google search on "fists akimbo." You're the #2 user of that phrase.

(How did I make God disappear and then reappear? I didn't. I used some of the equipment in my lab to create a couple of wormholes into godless and non-godless universes.)

I'd like to suggest adding "the person who thinks their religion is any different than the multitudes of religions past and present." All 3 are pretty foolish. Unless, of course, someone's right...

I'm trying to stay out of it, since I'd be foolish to think I know more than everyone else.

Also, I thought Akimbo was a fighting style until now.

Every religion is the same in that it was constructed by men. But no two gods could possibly be the same since they are (in theory) created by no man. So, that's where your argument falls flat. I would never imagine that my religion is better than someone else's, but I would be justified to be so bold as to say my God could beat up someone else's god. Because at that point, if I'm with the better God, he'll prove it himself, and if I'm not, I'm going down with him, so what difference does it make?
