Once Upon A Mime

Marcel Marceau passed away this Saturday. He was one of the living legends of stage that thespians, such as myself, cannot help but admire. He will be greatly missed.

I've included a video taken recently at a symposium in Poland. Marcel is goofing off with one of the presenters.

Celebrity Composure: 101

What do you do when you've been asked to an interview in Japan for your new Summer Blockbuster and instead of a volley of questions and answers you are seated in a special chair and insanely cute children start performing for you? Apparently, when you are a celebrity you have to know how to handle these unexpected occasions. Here's how Johnny Depp handled it.

Paul Newman Tops Up Kenyon College

I think this story is rather great, actually. Paul Newman is donating $10 million to his Alma Mater, Kenyon College. Always wanted a Paul Newman of my own* because he managed to stick by his woman all these years (and he's fabulously good looking) and here he is giving back to his former school in no-name Ohio. I think that's pretty stellar of him.

Also, I love his mint chocolate cookies, despite their exorbitant cost. As it says on the package:

You might, m'lady tweak my nose.
You could, m'lord step on my toes.
But Heaven help those poor bozos,
who try to filch my Newman-O's!

Indeed.

*It's OK, I f0und something better : )

Pop Princess in Close Shave

Britney Spears flies coach from FL to LA on Friday, stops into a hair salon and requests a completely shaved head. The kindly owner of the establishment refuses and tried to mother the poor girl a bit. At which point Britney takes a set of clippers and shaves her own head. The owner takes pity and evens up the trim for her (making the best out of a bad situation) where upon Britney reportedly looked at the mirror and cried, "What have I done? My mom's gonna kill me." She then decided to cross town to a local tattoo parlor where she got two tattoos. A crowd gathering outside vied for glimpses of the meltdown volcano inside.

Good girl, Britney. Way to scare yourself silly by doing something non-lethal, but visually appalling. Way to cry for attention in some way that will not have permanent lasting effect. I applaud you. And now, let's see if we can help you get some dignity back, too.

Blonde Ambition

The already tragic Anna Nicole Smith has assured herself a tragic ending by dying in her hotel room yesterday. Her five-month old daughter Danielynn and several hungry paternity suits survive her. Her dream of being the next Marilyn Monroe seems to have reached it's fruition. Best known for marrying an old billionare and acting crazy at the 2004 American Music Awards. (Video here)

Tabloid execs everywhere are grieving.

And now, a few snapshots of her (strange) life:

Uncle Funk Hits the Internet

My Uncle Fred (in the cart) has been a musician and singer in Utah for years now. He sings gigs about town, mostly with a fellow named Dave Hahn (my adopted Uncle, pushing the cart) and I just found out their latest video is airing on the interweb. I'm so proud!

What I Did Last Night

It was loud, and extremely bright and flashy, and overkill, and bright, and loud and flashy. I had to travel 2 and a half hours each way. I got home at 2AM. My ears are still ringing. My eyes are bloodshot. And I loved it!

Christmas comes but once a year and with it comes The Transiberian Orchestra.

(One of my favorite YouTube videos is still this guy's house.)

Ugg is for Uggly!

Ladies, let's have an honest discussion about footwear. Some footwear is attractive:

Some footwear is not:

Can we all agree that Uggs are uggly and that a beautiful woman should avoid putting them onto her body, at all times, unless she is in a blizzard in Minnesota? In which case, we would all be spared seeing them due to the driving snow. That would be ok. but seriously, them are some uggly boots. Just because celebrities wear them does not make them look any better. They look ugly on Kate Hudson and they will look ugly on you.

Please, stop the Uggs!

Steve Irwin Dies

In an appropriately bizarre animal related death, Steve Irwin, beloved Australian wildlife specialist and entertainer leaves the rest of us wondering who's going to wrestle all those alligators for us? Who's going to hunt crocodiles now and say things in his deliciously strong accent like, "Isn't she a beaut? She could reelly tayk a bayt outta ya!"

A sting ray, in an unlikely turn of events, pierced Irwin through the heart with its ten inch barbed tail during the filming of a TV show on the Great Barrier Reef, killing the film personality instantly. He was dead before the film crew pulled him from the water. He leaves behind a wife, two children, and millions of loyal fans. Myself included.

Music Appreciation Moment

You know, I'm not one to blather on about music on the web. It doesn't usually occur to me to talk about what I'm listening to, but just now a song came on that I needed to applaud.

Gladys Knight and Pips singing I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Have you heard this version? It's got so much soul, class and funk. I think I need to listen to it again. I used to think Marvin Gaye's version was the best seeing as how it was the biggest hit, but I take that back now. It's Gladys all the way. You go, Girl!
